Perennial grass ley rotations with annual crops in tropical Africa: A review

چکیده

Rotation of grass ley with periods annual crop production can be a means to increased farming system productivity, sustainability, and profitability. This research review offers interpretations rotation results for future African agriculture. Some studies were naturally generated severely over-grazed fallows consisting primarily plant species but other planted well-managed perennial ley. Generally, the rotations yields soil improvement. System benefits similar or greater compared fallow generally higher fodder Surface crusting sandy in Sahel is major concern that may worsened by due deposition clay silt particles. Ley terminated all inversion plow tillage more subsequent crops while less tillage. Most did not have fertilizer use yield response was greatly following one study no interaction effect three studies. The profitability will vary demand which rapidly increasing, especially near urban areas. Strip cropping, example, alternate strips 5–20 m width cycles 6–10 yr, often optimal erosion control sediment trapping, protection from uncontrolled grazing, nearby supply vegetative planting material re-establishment. management improved through experiential learning experimentation.

Diseases of Tropical Perennial Crops: Challenging Problems in Diverse Environments

The world’s oldest ecosystems are found in the tropics. They are diverse, highly evolved, but barely understood. Diseases that impact crops in these regions can be significant contraints to production, especially when they occur in lowland environments with high rainfall and uniform, warm temperatures; respites from disease pressure there are often infrequent. Difficulties in managing diseases ...

A Calculation Tool for Analyzing Nitrogen Use Efficiency in Annual and Perennial Crops

Assessment of crop nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) is important in agricultural research. Various approaches exist to analyze NUE. A recently proposed NUE concept is further developed and a calculation tool for practical use presented. A critical component in the NUE concept is the plants’ mean nitrogen (N) content during the main growth period (N’). The N’ is delimited by the critical crop pheno...

Cool Season Annual and Perennial Grass Forages for California – a New Perspective

There is an increase in awareness of the benefits of grass hay from an agronomic and nutritional perspective. The main cool season forage grass species adaptable to California are annual ryegrass, Italian ryegrass, perennial ryegrass, orchard grass and tall fescue. The main characteristics of these species along with attributes of different varieties are highlighted in this paper. The agronomic...
